Monday afternoon Nina Dobrev announced on Instagram that she would be leaving ‘The Vampire Diaries’ at the end of the season.
I was devastated as I read the news, as many other fans were too. The question that keeps going on in my mind is, how can there be a show without Elena? She’s the center of the series and I just don’t see how it can continue without her.
I had heard rumors for a while that Nina, 25, and her ex-boyfriend and co-star, Ian Somerhalder, weren’t getting a long on set after the break-up and one of them would be leaving the show. I hoped that it was all just rumors and that both actors would stay on till the end of the series.
The Hollywood Reporter confirmed that ‘TVD’ is coming back for a seventh season. The CW show was renewed for another season in January, but it definitely needed to be confirmed after the shocking news of the star leaving.
Rumors over the weekend also surfaced when crew members posted on social media photos of the cast and executive producer Julie Plec from the group trip with the hashtag #ninawewillmissyou, THR reported.
I don’t know if the rumors of Nina and Ian not getting along on set are true, but her leaving the show is now a reality. In her message to fans on Instagram she said she wanted Elena’s story to be six seasons. For Nina, it’s time for her to move on, but what about the show?
Can there really be a show without Elena Gilbert? The show has centered around her and the love triangle with the Salvatore brothers. I guess my hopes of Elena and Damon ending up together are ruined, seeing as Damon will be sticking around. I’m sure a lot of fans will be disappointed that Elena can’t end up with Damon or Stefan. How can this love triangle end with the girl not ending up with either guy?
Caroline (Candice Accola) is my favorite female character on ‘TVD’, but that doesn’t mean I won’t miss Elena when she’s gone. She may not be my favorite character, but that doesn’t mean I haven’t enjoyed her storyline and that I don’t believe that she’s integral to the storyline, because she’s very integral. There is no show without Elena and the Salvatore brothers. As much as I love Caroline, I think the show could go on without. I would personally be just as devastated if Candice left though.
Caroline has been becoming more central to the storyline, especially when it seems that Stefan and her might end up together. It will be nice if Stefan can end up with someone, but what about Damon? He only belongs with Elena.
I’m having a hard time wrapping my head around how the story can continue without Elena. Trying to picture life after Elena isn’t easy, especially when I’m still in shock about the news. I almost felt like crying when I read the news, but I was too in shock to process it. I’m sure I’ll be balling my eyes out on her last episode. Will the writers kill her off? Will she leave Mystic Falls forever? Will she take the cure? There’s so many questions!
In Nina’s statement on Instagram she said there’s still more to come for Elena’s crazy story, so anything could happen in her final episode and leading up to it.
I’ve enjoyed watching the love story between Damon and Elena, even while she was still with Stefan. It’s been a great journey and I’m saddened that it’s coming to an end, and not with them ending up together. I’m not sure how the writers can end Elena’s story to make me feel okay with it.
‘TVD’ returns Thursday, April 16 at 8/7c on the CW. This will be the beginning of the end for Elena and for her relationship with Damon. The season six finale will air Thursday, May 14. Are you ready to say goodbye to Elena Gilbert?
Here’s her message to fans on Instagram:
Dearest TVD Family,
I’ve just spent the most beautiful weekend on Lake Lanier in Georgia with my own TVD Family, the cast and crew of The Vampire Diaries. I want to be the first to tell you that it wasn’t just a holiday celebration, it was a goodbye party. I always knew I wanted Elena’s story to be a six season adventure, and within those six years I got the journey of a lifetime. I was a human, a vampire, a doppelganger, a crazy immortal, a doppelganger pretending to be human, a human pretending to be a doppelganger. I got kidnapped, killed, resurrected, tortured, cursed, body-snatched, was dead and undead, and there’s still so much more to come before the season finale in May. Elena fell in love not once, but twice, with two epic soulmates, and I myself made some of the best friends I’ll ever know and built an extended family I will love forever.
There’s more to come before we wrap this up, and I promise you’ll get to hear all about my experiences over the next month as we approach the season finale (I have given an exclusive interview for the June issue of SELF Magazine that I am excited for you to see!), but until then I invite you to hop on the roller coaster ride that is Elena Gilbert’s life and join me as I celebrate her and prepare to say goodbye to her — and to my work family — as I move on to the next chapter of my life. I want to share this goodbye with all of you (this weekend’s pictures were just the beginning). You, the wonderful fandom who gave more love, support and passion than anyone could have ever imagined seven years ago, when a young Degrassi girl from Canada showed up in LA to audition for ‘that Twilight TV show.’ 😉 I love you all. Fasten your seatbelts. If you think you know what’s coming, you don’t.
Love, Nina
