After a pretty great series premiere, Supergirl follows it up with a very solid second episode.
My concern last week was there weren’t enough strong male characters. I know, we finally get a female superhero and I’m talking about the male characters, but there really should be a mixture. As I said last week, that’s what I love about Arrow. Plus having a good mixture of strong character can draw in more viewers.
I see a lot of potential for good male roles in this show. James Olsen really has a lot of potential to be a great character. He’s trying to figure out who is without Superman. The scene where Kara said: “Part of being your own man is knowing when to accept help,” was very touching.
A lot of us forget to ask for help. And now he has this great opportunity to be on Supergirl’s team. Buffy had her Scooby gang and they were a really great team. Even Xander was a big part of the team. Buffy wouldn’t be who she was without her friends and it looks like Supergirl is going to be the same.
This makes me very excited for this show. It may turn out to be more like Arrow. Not saying that I want multiple superheroes, but if you think back to the beginning when it was Oliver, Felicity and Dig, they were a great team and that’s what I loved about it. It’s not just Oliver out there saving the city, it’s a team saving the city. Each of them does there part.
James won’t be Kara’s only teammate in her quest, Winn, her sister and the DEO will be there to back her up too.
This episode had some really special scenes. The scene between James and Kara wasn’t the only one. I also really loved the sister on sister fight. Little did Kara know, her sister was really teaching her lesson. One that would save her in battle. Kara may have superpowers, but she still needs her big sister.
I’m sure we are supposed to hate Cat, but I love her. That may be because I’m a fan of Calista Flockhart and I’ve really missed her since Brothers and Sisters was canceled.
There was two scenes I really liked with Calista this week. The one with James when she was telling him to get the interview with Supergirl or else. And the one where she tells Kara how hard she had to fight to get where she is today. Cat may be mean and tough, but she’s teaching Supergirl some important lessons.
What makes a solid shows is its characters and this one is filled with great characters. Kara is not perfect and she’s learning how to become a hero. This is great, because none of us are perfect and the writers are making her someone we can all relate to.
Kara is learning to control her powers and get stronger, she’s finding her way with the help of her friends and family. Now she has to figure out how to defeat her aunt, someone who hasn’t suppressed her powers.
Plus what is up with Hank’s red eyes? I’m assuming he’s an alien, but he still has his identity a secret. My biggest question is, is he friend or foe?
The episode had such a strong ending with Supergirl (aka Kara) putting Cat in her place. Cat is so use to being the most powerful woman and then all of a sudden she had Supergirl right in front of her. It seemed to be a humbling experience for Cat, well at least for a moment.
