If you have been waiting nervously to see if Scream Queen would be returning, you can breathe easier now, because it’s coming back for a second season. Plus some of the original cast will be returning too.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Fox TV Group chairmens and CEOs announced the good news at the Television Critics Association’s winter press tour Friday. Dana Walden and Gary Newman also said that the story would be leaving the college campus and heading to a hospital for the upcoming murder mystery.
Don’t worry, this won’t be like American Horror Story’s Asylum. Entertainment Weekly reported that Gary said:
“I don’t think it’s anything like Asylum, which was set in a period. The medical is an incredibly rich area to tell stories in. Ryan has always loved the medical area. Nip/Tuck was a show he really enjoyed the creative on. It seemed like a great, broad area.”
Dana said that Ryan Murphy intends to bring some of the actors back, but which ones haven’t been decided yet. Some of them may even play their old characters, but they are only in preliminary conversations and nothing has been decided yet.
Official casting will be announced at a later date.
EW also heard that originally a summer camp theme was talked about for the second season, but they decided on the hospital setting.
I wish they went with the summer camp setting. I think that would have been a great concept. The first season at times seemed like a spoof on horror films, so a summer camp setting would have been amazing. Not that a hospital setting can’t be creepy.
Scream Queens struggled with live ratings in its first season, but if you take a look at it’s DVR, VOD and Hulu ratings, it’s amazing. TVLine said only 30% of the shows audience watched FOX live, 26% was on DVR and 44% on VOD and Hulu.
THR said views went from 2.7 million on the day to 7.2 million including other platforms. Scream Queens was the number one new series on VOD and social media this fall.
This data doesn’t surprise me at all. It’s a show for millennials and they don’t always watch live. They also are more likely to watch shows on other platforms.
Scream Queens was the most fun show to live tweet during, so no surprise on the social front. Emma Roberts, Skyler Samuels, Lea Michele, Abigail Breslin, Keke Palmer and other cast mates were known for live tweeting during the show.
We don’t know which of these actors will come back yet. But I hope Emma Roberts returns, because she was amazing. She was the bitch you never wanted to die. She made you laugh, she made you shake your head and she made you envy her closet. She’s a character that really should have been hated, but between the writing and Emma’s performance, we just fell in love.
According to THR, Ryan, Dana and Gary are wanting to broaden the series for season two with a cast of different age groups. They probably want to bring in a broader audience that will tune in live.
It would be amazing if Jamie Lee Curtis could return. We love her at any age.
Stay tuned for more information as season two of Scream Queens develops. I don’t know about you, but I can’t wait to see what Ryan comes up with.
