The entire season was renamed because of the Mad Hatter. Jervis Tetch has swooped into Gotham and is making a mess, especially stirring things up for Jim Gordon.
I spoke with Benedict Samuel on the PaleyFest red carpet about playing the Mad Hatter.
“I feel very lucky to be given such a fantastic and exciting role to essentially mess up Gotham, completely, so it’s great,” he said.
There’s going to be a lot more interactions between Tetch and Gordon, particularly on Monday night’s episode.
The Mad Hatter is surprised that Gordon broke his trance but also believes that he’s always surprised by people. This particular surprise delights his character.
“It gives him something to play with. I think that the minute that someone becomes boring to him, it’s like a kid with a new toy, it’s very quickly forgotten,” he said.
Tetch is very upset about his sister and according to Benedict, this has great importance for his character:
“Alice is, we’re two sides of the same coin. I think that’s a really important way to think of the Mad Hatter because without her, there’s a hole half that’s missing.”
Now that his sister is out of the picture, “I think really, the endgame could be anything. Gotham is his oyster,” he added.
