Through all the years Julie Plec has broken our hearts and killed off characters, she always does a beautiful goodbye for the character. She did not disappoint for Hayley Marshall.
Julie has certainly surprised us with the deaths on The Vampire Diaries and The Originals, but this may have been one of the biggest. At least, Stefan made it to the series finale of The Vampire Diaries. Hayley (Phoebe Tonkin) has been with us since day one of The Originals, and I never saw this death coming. She was a Mikaelson even if she didn’t have the name. She was also an alpha to her pack and respected by both vampires and witches. There are not many people that can say that in New Orleans. I was annoyed when her parade was interrupted, and just like Hope (Danielle Rose Russell), I was mad when Marcel (Charles Michael Davis) and Vincent (Yusuf Gatewood) didn’t show up. I was thinking, this can’t be it for Hayley’s farewell. It wasn’t. The writers made up for the parade at the bayou with Freya’s (Riley Voelkel) heartfelt words, and Klaus (Joseph Morgan) showing up for Hope, even though this was bringing them closer to biblical destruction and the death of all firstborns. How could Klaus not be there for his daughter when her mother just died? She needs him more than ever now. It was the perfect moment to say goodbye to Hayley and I think she would have approved.
It’s like Klaus said, their family is truly cursed. Marcel and Freya couldn’t understand why Klaus wouldn’t want Elijah (Daniel Gillies) to have his memories back. This would certainly help him stay away from his siblings and Hope. Klaus didn’t want the burden of what he had done to fall on him. I’m sure when Elijah realizes he played a role in Hayley’s death, it will break him. Klaus does despicable things but he cares for his family, and sometimes he really does try to protect them.
No one ever listens to Klaus, though. It seems the memories were too painful for Elijah to let back in and now he’s trapped in his own mind. We’ve seen him be trapped in his own mind before, and it never ends well. Will this time truly break him or could he finally overcome everything?
