‘The Bold Type’ Review: What Will Jane do with Her Failure?
In every episode, The Bold Type will inspire you and sometimes even teach you something. This week, there was a very important lesson learned.
Last week Jane (Katie Stevens) was fired. She seemed to take it pretty well. Her first day of unemployment started with her girls, a list and a shot of tequila. It all went downhill from there. She hasn’t realized what her mistake was to be able to move on and interview for more jobs. When her calls didn’t go well and her interview tanked, she ran straight back to Scarlet. I was happy that Jacqueline (Melora Hardin) didn’t just hire her back. Jane went to Incite without doing enough research about the publication. It wasn’t a right fit for her, but she didn’t know that. She was attracted by the fact that she could write hard-hitting journalism but every publication is different. Jacquline is teaching Jane a very valuable lesson.
That’s one of the reasons I love this show. Last season we got to see Sutton (Meghann Fahy) negotiate for more benefits. This season we got to see Sutton put her career first. These are both things we don’t talk about enough. Most shows depict woman choosing the guy over the career, and there aren’t enough conversations about choosing career first. This storyline is not right for everyone, but it’s a story worth telling.
Sutton was absolutely killing it this episode. She was trending and once again, Oliver (Stephen Conrad Moore) gave her a big responsibility. If the response wasn’t hard enough, Kat (Aisha Dee) had to ask her to hire Adena (Nikohl Boosheri) to do the shoot. Kat put Sutton in a tough spot. She’s still an assistant and needs to impress her boss, but she wants to be there for her friend. Sutton took the chance on Adena and it worked out very well. The candy theme wasn’t working, and if Adena hadn’t been there, they might not have been able to do something inspired.
Inspiration didn’t just happen in the photo shoot. When Jacquline was giving Sutton advice about who to chose for the shoot, Sutton inspired her to start writing again. We got to see a lot of Jacquline mentoring Jane last season, and a little with the other ladies, but it’s great that she’s giving even more advice to all of them.
We’re getting to learn a lot about Adena. I felt so bad for her when she overheard Kat and Sutton fighting about her, but then instead of being upset about it, Adena talked to Sutton. I love how this show depicts girls getting mad at each other but working it out. There’s a lot of drama on this show, but no unnecessary drama.
