The Midnight Club gave us just as many answers as it did questions, and it was a lot of fun to see the parents as kids. They were very different people back then.
We were teased with a very troubled relationship between Betty (Lili Reinhart) and her mother this season, but we got a nice mother-daughter episode this week. It was nice to see Alice (Mädchen Amick) and Betty getting along for once.
Alice told Betty exactly what happened all those years ago. For a brief moment in time, their parents were all friends. All until tragedy struck. They were playing Griffins & Gargoyles when their principle was poisoned. It’s hard to know who left the poison. Everyone was tripping when it happened. Except for Alice, because she was pregnant at the time. She left as the principal arrived.
The big questions are who arranged the Ascension party and who left the poison? Was it one of the Midnight Club or was it someone else? Clearly, someone could have not taken the drug and orchestrated the whole thing. I don’t think anyone noticed at the time that Alice didn’t take it.
I really liked that Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa took the time to show what happened in this way. I loved seeing all the parents when they were young. I also liked that we got to see how and why they are the people they are today. That one night changed everything for them.
The game has clearly escalated since the parents played it. No one drank from the chalices back then, but now a lot of the kids are.
We were teased that the characters would be dealing with things on their own this season. The season started with Bughead on the case and I was wondering how Betty would get isolated, and now we know. Jughead (Cole Sprouse) starts playing the game and gets very sucked in. Clearly, he believes playing the game is the best way to solve this mystery but Betty looks very worried, and I am too. We don’t know who is pulling the strings on the game, so we can’t know how the game will end.
I don’t think we could have gotten through this mystery without someone in the main group playing the game. Riverdale likes to keep us on the edge of our seat and with this path, they definitely will. At least Betty is on the case, if anyone can get to the bottom of this, it’s her.
