Last week we had one intense storyline and two calmer ones, but this week all three were pretty intense. Not only were they intense, but we also got to know some of the characters better.
Tell Me a Story is very different than the others projects Kevin Williamson has done and in such a good way. I like when you do see something coming, you can tell that he’s deliberately letting you know this is coming.
For instance, when Kayla (Danielle Campbell) and Nick (Billy Magnussen) were talking, they were not hiding well. At the beginning of the episode, they said they have to be more careful, but everything they did after was anything but, careful. They were talking, and the camera kept going to where you could see them in between the rubbage. That was not hiding. Of course, Ethan (Rarmian Newton) was going to catch them.
I didn’t think much of Ethan when we met him, but clearly, he’s going to play a big role in this story. I don’t think he has any intention on outing Nick and Kayla just yet, I think he wants to have some fun, reckless fun. He’s also messing with Laney (Paulina Singer). This can’t end well.
While the Kayla / Nick story is very cliched and has been done so many times, I like the nuances that Kevin is using. Ethan is definitely a good touch to this storyline. However this blows up, it could easily be because of Ethan.
Also, Nick is getting pretty obsessive. So, his obsessiveness could also blow the whole thing up. He seems like such a sweet guy, but he’s fallen for Kayla pretty hard. I’m not sure if he’s an innocent guy that just got seduced by a beautiful teenager, or if there is more to him than meets the eye. He clearly isn’t as innocent as he seems, since he is pursuing this relationship.
I also like the backstory we have with Kayla, and we haven’t delved into all of that yet.
Jordan (James Wolk) is an absolute mess. His fiancee dying has recked him, and he might get in the way of getting any justice for her death. It’s an interesting storyline because it’s hard to know whose side to be on. Of course, any girl who is a fan of Paul Wesely is feeling conflicted as it is, but the character he plays, Eddie, is just a messed up guy whose brother pulled him into this.
There is hardly any good guys on this show. There are a lot of shades of grey. Jordan was the good guy, but now that he’s trying to take justice into his own hands, you could say he’s the bad guy and Eddie is the victim in that case.
I will give James major props for how he’s portraying this character. He’s completely changed from episode one and he just keeps getting darker each episode. His eyes are completely dead inside, and you really don’t know how far he will go.
Hannah (Dania Ramirez) and Gabe (Davi Santos) are officially on the run and neither of them are good or bad either. Gabe started this whole thing with his mistake, but Hannah has definitely made it worse.
We got to see the reasons why they are who they today, but I think we will delve more into that when finding out more about their mother.
There was a lot in this episode and this was a shorter one. I like that Kevin is playing with this kind of storytelling. This episode didn’t need to be longer than 45 minutes. I want more, but I didn’t want more from this episode. Kevin made the right decision in keeping it short.
It looks like next week there will be a lot of backstories. I’m particularly looking forward to Kayla’s backstory.
