I’m changing things up a little bit. I’ve decided to write about why I fell in love with TV shows. They have always been there for me when I needed them. I somehow manage to watch the right episode at the right time, whether re-run, new or catching up, that will tell me what I need to hear. In middle school, Dawson’s Creek and Buffy the Vampire Slayer did precisely that, and The Vampire Diaries helped me through my divorce.
I’ve decided to write about the advice these shows give me.
At the moment, Gossip Girl is helping me through being laid off. I recently decided I needed a career change from communications (of course, keeping journalism and TV shows as my side gigs). I want to be a buyer for a department store. It all clicked after seeing a career coach. Applying to jobs was getting me nowhere. She told me to take a break because I was burnt out, and I did. When I finally figured out what I wanted to do, I was determined to make it happen. I even found a certificate course from the Business of Fashion, which I bought the subscription on the Black Friday sale. It was all coming together.
So, on Monday, December 2, I was ready for a new chapter and to get down to work. I had recently stopped listening to news podcasts while getting ready and was having TV shows in the background. I decided, my new chapter deserved a rewatch of Gossip Girl. I was also moving to the Upper East Side in two weeks. Serena was the reason I fell in love with fashion. It seemed like a fitting choice. I got up at 6 am to read fashion news before going to work, and 8 hours later, my entire department was eliminated. At the time, it felt like a punch in the gut. I hated the job, but I had been working hard and had been there for almost three years. I also had a plan for my future, but I thought, what do I do now? This ruffled it a little bit. I took that Business of Fashion course of buying and merchandising in less than a week and took the first week to process as well. All while this was going on, I was watching Gossip Girl, and It’s kept me sane.
It’s scary to be moving to a new place and losing your job and starting a new career path, but somehow when I press play on Netflix, Serena, Blair, Dan, Nate, and Chuck make it alright. I’m figuring it out, and I’m figuring it out with them.
