When Riverdale first started, I was a Barchie fan. It had Dawson’s Creek vibes with two childhood friends seeming like they were soulmates and would one day find their way to each other. Joey and Dawson did get together a couple of times throughout the series but ultimately were better off as best friends.
If you were to say that Betty (Lili Reinhart) and Archie (K.J. Apa) are probably better off as friends, too, the Barchie fans would probably attack you on Twitter.
The Riverdale shippers have always been passionate. They are protective over their favorite ships, but I saw an uptick in their passion during Wednesday’s episode. Especially from the Barchie fans. I don’t usually hear much commentary from this group, and that could be because there haven’t been many moments to get excited about on screen.
I, for one, am always excited for a great moment between Betty and Archie when it shows how strong and deep their friendship is. I love that relationship, and I love it when we get to see it amid all the craziness.
I wasn’t too happy when a few episodes ago, the writers hinted at a Barchie pairing. I have fallen in love with Bughead and Varchie over the last couple of seasons, and I do not want to see Veronica (Camila Mendes) or Jughead (Cole Sprouse) get hurt. The writers have built up those relationships too much to blow it all up with Betty and Archie getting together.
Plus, some of the most influential moments are when the four are together trying to solve a mystery or help each other. We would lose those storylines if Barchie became a reality. Though, you have to wonder if their kisses will come back to haunt their current relationships. For Betty to decide it is over before it began, you have to wonder what the point was.
While I would be upset if Bughead and Varchie were no more, I am not one of those shippers that would stop watching the show because my favorite ships were not together. Other things could make me stop watching the show — like they are now going to kill the principal next week? Where did that come from? Some of these storylines are getting out of hand.
