I’m still not quite over the ending of the mid-season finale of Wynonna Earp. You wanted to be happy for WayHaught, but looking at Wynonna broke my heart.
Our WayHaught hearts were bursting when Waverly (Dominique Provost-Chalkley) proposed to Nicole (Katherine Barrell) a second time, and this time she said yes. It was a family affair as Wynonna (Melanie Scrofano), Doc (Tim Rozon), Jeremy (Varun Saranga), Rachel (Martina Ortiz-Luis), and Nedly (Greg Lawson) watch as it all unfolded.
What should have been a heartwarming moment was dampened by the fact that Wynonna and Doc were being torn apart. It was hard not to cry as you watched Melanie breakdown. Wynonna was so happy for her sister, but her own heart was breaking.
Melanie has always given her all to this character, but it seemed like she had brought new energy into the Earp heir this season. The show has been so much fun and a needed reprieve from the chaos of the world.
The mid-season finale was the best episode yet. The writers, actors, producers, and crew not only brought the fun, but it also brought the suspense and the emotions.
Nicole was dead in a bathtub, and her soul was first in a frog and then leaped out to save Waverly from the reaper. It was so intense. And everything I could have ever wanted and more.
Wynonna reunited with Peacemaker. While I still love it when she has to get more creative without her gun, when Peacemaker showed itself, and she killed the nun remnant, it was like she was being reunited with a part of herself. It was incredible. Peacemaker is genuinely part of her, and at least as her heart is breaking, she got that part of her back.
The tension starting from last season have made our characters do some pretty uncharacteristic things. Nicole traded Doc to save Waverly. Waverly killed Mam to save Nicole, and Wynonna shot Sherrif Clayborn (Ty Olsson) in the back to ensure the Claytons never came after her family again.
We will have to wait until 2021 to see how these actions weigh on them, but it’s already torn Doc and Wynonna apart. While I understand why Wynonna did it, Doc brokered peace. She could let the family go. As Clayborn said, it was a feud started by relatives he’d never met. Why did they have to keep it going? She shouldn’t have shot him in the back.
Part of her may be beginning to see why it was wrong, but she’s definitely hurt that her choice has made Doc look at her differently. She finally had her team and Peacemaker back, to have her heart ripped out.
I’m much more understanding how Waverly, in a fit of rage, could kill Mam. I’m interested to see how these decisions weigh on them. There’s no way they don’t have an impact on them or the show.
What’s next for our team? Are the Claytons defeated? There’s still one left, and she’s not going to be too happy to find out she’s the last one.
Or do we get a new villain for the second half of the season?
2021 seems like a lifetime away as we’re stuck in a year that has been relentless to us. Let us be thankful that we have six more episodes coming our way. Two years ago, that wasn’t a certainty.
