The boys are driving into the sunset as we flashback to season one episode one, where the boys slam the trunk and say, “we have work to do,” and it fades to black. The Winchesters’ work is done.
That montage made me a little teary-eyed, watching 15 years of memories go by. But we do have a special farewell and one more episode before we say goodbye. And this episode was where Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Dean (Jensen Ackles) finally finished their job.
The showdown against Chuck (Rob Benedict) was quieter than I expected. That didn’t make the final battle any less enjoyable, though. Sam and Dean were quietly planning how to take down Chuck throughout the entire episode.
There were so much hopelessness and moments of breakthroughs in the Penultimate episode of Supernatural.
They thought Michael (Jake Abel) could help, but he couldn’t open Death’s book. Then even Lucifer (Mark Pellegrino) came to help, but it turns out he was there for his daddy.
It was nice to see Lucifer and Michael again. It’s a throwback to seasons four and five. We haven’t seen Michael as much, but Lucifer, no matter how many times they kill him, makes his way back.
It makes sense that ending God would involve his two favorite angels.
Michael, one last time helped his daddy, but it was hopeless because the Winchesters have dealt with angels for so long now that they know better.
It was fun watching the angels try and fail to help their father because Sam and Dean noticed Jack (Alexander Calvert) was absorbing powers. So, Michael and Lucifer fighting let Jack gain more powers. Then with both of their death’s even more. Enough to take all of Chuck’s powers and leave him human.
I was expecting some blowout fight against Chuck. Or something like Bobby and Castiel (Misha Collins) dying to give Dean time and Lucifer beating Dean to a pulp before Sam took control and jumped into the cage.
What we got was the Winchesters proving what great hunters they are. They can fool Michael and God.
It was an incredible twist to an episode that seemed so hopeless. In the end, Chuck could never control them. And as we always knew they would, Sam and Dean saved the world again. They saved everyone. They didn’t even need Death’s book to get the job done—just themselves.
And now we have a new God, Jack, who has learned from Sam, Dean, and Cas. Sadly, they have to part ways, but it’s great that the world will be a better place for it.
And thank you to Alex for portraying such a beautiful character. He had his ups and downs, but I knew who he was, and in the back of my mind, I thought he should be the new God.
Can Jack bring back Cas? Will he bring back Cas? He said he’s going to be hands-off. And Cas made his peace with his decision. And it was a beautiful way to wrap up his story, no matter what side of the Destiel debate you are on. I only wish they could have foreshadowed that moment and not spring it on us the way they did.
And when will Dean tell Sam about how Cas died? Or is this something he takes to his grave with him?
We have one episode left. And Chuck is gone. How will the Winchesters’ story end?
