Never before have we see these doctors and nurses rallied as hard as they did for Nic Nevin. They fight for every patient, but when the hospital was shut down and things were wrapped up, even Dr. Randolph Bell was in the OR getting it ready for Nic’s surgery. No one cared what their job was or their place, they all jumped in and did everything they could do to save Nic and her baby.
As heartbreaking as it was to see Nic (Emily VanCamp) and Dr. Conrad Hawkins (Matt Czuchry) in this situation. It was so heartwarming to see everyone come together for her. It was such a beautiful thing to see.
I’m not sure how I feel about the writers tearing us apart to progress the storyline and save Chastain. Yes, it was a great hour of television, and I loved seeing this family at its best, but damn, they broke my heart.
Of course, I do watch Grey’s Anatomy, and even before the covid storyline, they definitely broke me many times. So, who am I to complain?
One thing I do love about these emotional episodes is what we get to see out of the actors. Matt was incredible, showing his pain. Nic’s dad (Corbin Bernsen) seriously lost it when he found out his daughter was pregnant after she got hurt. Dr. Mina Okafor (Shaunette Renée Wilson), first she’s the badass stapling her arm to jump right back in to save Nic, and then she’s crying, blaming herself.
It’s these memorable moments that make an episode like this. And it makes you love the cast even more.
While the episode appeared not to be a typical episode, the writers still squeezed in Conrad solving a difficult case. This time it was Nic.
When Nic wasn’t waking up, the first thing I thought was, we saw her thyroid test’s negative outcome. Is that the cause? And, of course, it was. It was served up for us. Maybe because we would be too involved with everything else going on to think about the problem.
Conrad and Bell (Bruce Greenwood) never gave up on saving Chastain. And it may have taken Nic getting hurt for Marshall (Glenn Morshower) to jump in to help, but in the end that was just enough for them to come up with a Hail Mary, as Marshall said, to save the hospital.
Dr. Kit Voss (Jane Leeves) was quite ingenious in going to Governor Nichelle Randall (Nichelle Hines) to help make Chastain into a public hospital. Not only did Conrad and the hospital save her life, her affair never came out, that we know off.
The Resident’s doctors and nurses have been fighting against the system since day one. And now they get to be a public hospital and actually treat patients without all the red tape. This could show what healthcare should be. It’s there to help people.
Look what happened when Chastain was closing. The other hospitals had to turn away patients and a guy who needed serious help, not only couldn’t get help but he also almost killed Nic and her baby and hurt Mina. And if it weren’t for Dr. Barrett Cain’s (Morris Chestnut) brilliant idea and doctors willing to do another surgery in an almost shut hospital, Henry (Kenneth Tigar) would have had to go to hospice and wait to die, and now he gets to live longer.
I’m sure Cain won’t be too happy to hear that Chastain is now public, that is if he can come back to operate. They transferred him to where all his hopeless patients go. It was hard not to laugh. He’s learning the hard truths of what his negligence has done to people. I hope he does come back, because he is brilliant, but hopefully, he learns from this.
Though, I did enjoy the laughs with him during an otherwise intense episode. He’s arrogant even when tapping on a white board, but it was a nice tension relief.
