From drawing her own superhero to being one. That’s who Texas Ranger Micki Ramirez is, and I’m here for it!
We may have tuned in for Jared Padalecki and the other familiar faces, Keegan Allen and Odette Annable, but we got something really special with Micki (Lindsey Morgan).
She’s trying to find her place in this role while also trying to create change within.
She didn’t like being used as the good Mexican catching the bad Mexican for the press, even though she finally had a seat at the table. It didn’t feel right.
Her boyfriend, Trey (Jeff Pierre), told her she might need to play the game a little first. And that being a trailblazer isn’t easy.
She’s certainly stepping up in her role. Something didn’t sit right with her when she saw the suspect had stopped his criminal ways after starting to work at the ranch. Her hunch was right.
It turns out the ranch owner was the guy’s father, and he didn’t kill his father. The sheriff did on the verge of his retirement because he was having an affair with the ranch owner’s wife, and the husband found out.
This led to one of the most exciting scenes yet. Micki got in the car with the sheriff to get him to confess. Cordell Walker (Jared) was in the truck following behind her. He called her, and she answered to let him hear. She bluffed about the evidence of the autopsy, which she would turn out to be right. And he was so so pissed he pulled a gun on her while driving. But Walker pulled in front and got him to stop, and she handcuffed him to the steering wheel.
It was quite the adrenaline rush.
She really is becoming a hero. Maybe not quite like the one she once drew, but she’s creating her version of it.
I love that since she couldn’t see herself as a hero anywhere, that she drew one herself. And while their suspect died, she was able to make a difference in a young Mexican girl’s life. Since their suspect was the ranch owner’s son and was written into the will, the money was passed on to their suspect’s daughter. This will enable her to go back to med-school. Micki got a happy ending for the young woman.
Unlike the one Walker and Emily (Genevieve Padalecki) got. But that case may not be closed after all. Walker couldn’t put it to rest. But Liam (Keegan) and Captain Larry James (Coby Bell) pushed him to put the case away and focus on his family. Which really is what he should have been doing anyway.
He may not have been wrong, though. James just pulled footage from the case. And Liam is right, why did he tell Walker to let it go if he’s looking into it?
Near the end of the episode, James was celebrating with Micki and Walker on a successful case and said, sometimes you have to work the case off the books to get it on the books. Is this what James is doing?
There is a lot of unknowns. One of which is Walker’s undercover work, but it looks like we’ll get to what Walker undercover looks like soon!
August (Kale Culley) was digging around in his dad’s stuff. While yes, Walker was weird about his box of stuff, he wasn’t lying when he said it was from an old case. That was definitely not the box August should be digging around.
While August was charging the phone, he found a photo of his dad and a woman. You may jump to the conclusion that Walker had an affair, especially after finding out his mother did, but it was someone on his case.
August confronted him and found out it wasn’t what he expected, but it was too late, he had already sent a text to a woman on the phone, and she responded. Which now means Walker has to go back undercover.
There are many cute family moments, but I’m dying to sink my teeth into the Ranger storyline and what happened to Emily. I loved having the episode be more focused on the case and Micki being more in the lead. She’s this powerful badass woman we need to see more of.
Ensemble casts are hard. It’s hard to give everyone enough time, especially when everyone is so great. We didn’t even get Geri (Odette) in this episode. It’s easier on shows like Chicago PD and Grey’s Anatomy because there’s mostly a focus on a police or a medical case. But on a show like Walker, where it’s half police cop show and half family drama, that makes it more difficult to balance.
I love Stella (Violet Brinson) and August. And I liked the storylines they got separate from Walker in this episode, while we could still have it be more about the case.
“Don’t Fence Me In” was a great balancing act. But I really love Liam, and I want to see more of him. That’s the problem when you love so many of the characters. You always want more!
