The final season of Younger has begun. It feels so comforting to have these characters back on our screens again as long as we don’t think about the end in sight.
The writers wasted no time in bringing back the Younger love triangle. We’re back to asking the question, who will Liza (Sutton Foster) end up with? Darren Star better give us an answer, or I will never forgive him.
At the end of last season, Charles (Peter Hermann) asked Liza to marry him. The answer was not a no, but it was also not a yes.
I’m sure the true reason for this break-up was to bring the triangle back for the last season and keep us guessing until the very end, but I really like that Liza didn’t want to get married. She also didn’t want to break up.
Sometimes it’s tiring to see the traditional happily ever after of getting married. Life is much more complicated than that. And we’ve seen Liza, Kelsey (Hilary Duff) and Lauren (Molly Bernard) have their highs and lows. And they all followed their own paths.
The breakup also is leading to a lot more drama because Quinn (Laura Benanti) is back. She’s writing another book. This time about failure. She really is a marketing queen. She just can’t be trusted.
I was just starting to like her. All she wanted to do for her birthday was spend it at Dave and Buster’s, and she said she brought her C-suit team there for team building. Maybe, there was more about her than we first realized.
Then, she basically told Liza that she would be kicked out if she didn’t play nice with her, the “publisher’s girlfriend.” Nope. She is the same Quinn we always knew.
Liza and Charles were not the only couple to break up early on in the final season. Zane (Charles Michael Davis) also left Kelsey. He quit after Charles gave her a seat on the board. This breakup was not so surprising, seeing as Charles Michael Davis was not going to be a regular in the final season. Damn the schedules of actors.
Anyways, we were so preoccupied with Charles and Liza it took me a minute to realize that Kelsey didn’t take long to grieve this relationship. Then, at the Empirical rebranding party, she found out Zane become a publisher for another company. She was furious.
Luckily, Liza knew just where to go, the wine cellar. They were able to scream, and no one could hear them.
It’s these fun moments of Younger that I love the most. Just so real and relatable.
We didn’t know it then, but it wasn’t Zane she was mad at. It was herself for not going through with creating her own publishing company. I’m excited to see Kelsey find her way back to launching her own company.
Diana (Miriam Shor) is also sadly not a regular this season either. But seeing more of Lauren is definitely making up for that fact. She’s now in the office with Kelsey and Liza standing in for Diana.
It’s so much fun watching her emulate Diana’s style. Though, no one else can pull of Diana’s trademark necklaces.
Josh (Nico Tortorella) is definitely having a quiet start to the season. He’s totally in love with his baby girl. His tattoo shop is doing well, and he found a hot new girl, only to have it ruined when he found out she doesn’t like kids.
That’s okay. We’re all focused on him finding his way back to Liza.
It was clear from last season that Josh still loves Liza, but he hasn’t made any proclamations this season yet. When he found out Charles and she broke up, that look on his face was a mixture of relief and sadness. Sadness for Liza, but this opens up the door for him again.
Younger‘s final season is giving us everything we love about the show, and hopefully, it will leave us with an end to the love triangle.
Who will Liza end up with? The question remains. Tweet me @MandyTTCarr or comment below.
