The Resident is quickly approaching Grey’s Anatomy territory as it keeps bringing me to tears.
What we all expected is coming true. Dr. Jake Wong (Conrad Ricamora) and his husband, Gregg (Christopher J. Hanke), are adopting Sammie (Chedi Chang)! The excitement was short-lived as her condition was worsening. She had an infection from her operation. Dr. Randolph Bell (Bruce Greenwood) had to rush her into surgery as she got worse. And this surgery could be fatal.
Sammie told them, “see you on the other side.” She was optimistic about seeing her family when she was done. I was a nervous wreck as they wheeled her into the OR. The surgery went well, but they would have to wait through the night to see if she would make it. Jake and Gregg just couldn’t catch a break.
Then, things were looking up when they woke up to see Sammie eating jello, and she asked for more!
The relief on Bell’s face said it all. He was sitting just outside her room doing paperwork. It’s incredible how much Bell has stepped up for Jake. It was clear he didn’t think them adopting Sammie was a good idea, given her health issues. He was mostly concerned with them getting hurt again, but he didn’t tell them. He supported them throughout.
It’s such a beautiful story of Jake and Gregg losing their original daughter but finding a young girl that needed them even more and spoke Chinese. This is a wonderful adoption story. It wasn’t what they pictured. It’s even better.
Episode 13 was aptly named ” Finding Family.” Jake and Gregg finally found their daughter. Nic Nevin (Emily VanCamp) and Dr. Conrad Hawkings (Matt Czuchry) were having their baby shower, and at the end of the episode, she goes into labor!
They weren’t the only ones finding family. Dr. Billie Sutton’s (Jessica Lucas) long-lost son had found her. She told Nic that she had been raped when she was 13. The story gets even more tragic as she’s setting up Nic’s baby shower. She’s getting texts from the son she gave up for adoption.
She finally confesses to Nic who the texts are from. She’s terrified to meet him because she’s afraid she’ll see the guy who raped her in his face. And what if he asks about his father? For now, she’s staying away.
Billie has such a tragic past. It’s amazing how far she’s come. I love the strength in her. I also want to know how her past ties in with her present. We’ve seen Nic and Conrad’s past weaved into their present. They were great storylines for both of them and really showed the layers of their characters. I’m looking forward to seeing the same happen with Billie.
While the “Finding Family” theme of the episode was going on, Dr. Devon Pravesh (Manish Dayal) and Dr. Leela Davi (Anuja Joshi) were getting coffee when he saw Rose (Cara Ricketts) and Dr. Barrett Cain (Morris Chestnut) together, and they were clearly together. As they walk to work, there is an apartment building on fire. They quickly jump in to help.
A man comes running out of the burning building with one of the resident’s sons. He’s badly injured as Prevash jumps in. Davi ends up being part of his surgical team and quickly falls for him. He’s a hero. She really admired that.
Dr. AJ Austin (Malcolm-Jamal Warner) warned her about getting close to patients. She said that’s not her, but apparently, it is because she couldn’t let go when his heart stopped, and they weren’t able to revive him.
She had a heartwarming conversation with Pravesh about what kind of surgeon she wants to be. She decided that she couldn’t be a robot because that’s not who she is. Devon had landed on the same thing.
The writers are definitely going to make these two a couple. I was kind of against it at first because Devon is her ally in the hospital, being the only one that knows about her dyslexia, but as I said before, all nurses and doctors date on this show, so it should come as no surprise. The more that they have these heartwarming scenes, I’m starting to love them together.
While Leela was getting attached to her patient, Devon was already way attached to Rose. It was a little odd how taken aback he was when he saw Cain and her together. This isn’t news. We’ve seen them get close in the hospital. It was nice that he was dealing with the same thing, so he was able to talk to Leela about it. Whether or not caring for their patients makes them better doctors or not is beside the point here. It makes for incredible television.
I loved how happy Devon was when Rose’s labs came back, and they had cured her of sickle cell anemia. We wouldn’t have this amazing storyline if it weren’t for Devon carrying so much. Cara was also amazing throughout this arc. This storyline was dedicated to Rose Elizabeth Honorat, who didn’t live long enough to see this cure. This clinical trial is real, which makes this story even more incredible.
AJ also got good news. The targeted therapy seems to be working, but the promo for next week doesn’t look good for his mother. So this happiness will be very short-lived.
I do love the scenes with him and his parents. They are such a close nit family. Sometimes it’s hard to remember that he’s adopted because of the connection they all have. It will be sad to lose these scenes. This definitely makes up a lot of who AJ is. If his mother doesn’t make it, he will be broken.
Malcolm-Jamal is doing incredible work with all the heartache the writers are throwing his character. We’ll have to see how this will affect his storyline.
