The Resident‘s farewell episode for Nic Nevin was brutal and beautiful and left me crying with no words.
How do I write an article about an episode that left me crying, unable to even tweet? First, I’ll wipe away the tears, and then I’ll try to make sense of everything that just happened.
Sadly, we knew Emily VanCamp (Nic) was leaving, so we knew how this episode would end, but as we got closer and closer to the unenviable, it broke me more every step of the way. There were so many lines that were bringing us closer to letting Nic go. First, Dr. Billie Sutton (Jessica Lucas) said she couldn’t fix Nic’s injuries. Then, Dr. Randolph Bell (Bruce Greenwood) said Nic was gone. And finally, Dr. Devon Pravesh (Manish Dayal) said Nic was brain dead.
I wanted to be in denial, just like Dr. Conrad Hawkins (Matt Czuchry) and Nic’s father, Kyle (Corbin Bernsen), but we knew the truth. Conrad had hope. He truly believed that his wife would make it through this, even when all the science was saying otherwise. The more he fought, the more it broke my heart.
Then Kyle was even more defiant, and Conrad had to tell him that Nic wouldn’t wake up. It was so brutal. Everyone’s heart was breaking over and over again in this episode.
While The Resident broke our hearts, it also gave an excellent farewell to Nic. The writers made her an organ donor so she would save countless lives. She even saved one of her patients that had long-haul Covid. He needed a transplant, and Nic was able to provide that for him. It seems fitting that she would be an organ donor. She saved lives. That’s what she did when she was alive, too.
When Conrad, Bell and Dr. Kit Voss (Jane Leeves) walked Nic down the hallway with all the doctors and nurses lined at the walls, I lost it. Nic was so loved. While no one feels the loss more than Conrad, the entire hospital is saying goodbye to Nic. She touched so many people. I loved how we got to see flashbacks of Nic with Jessica (Jessica Miesel), Hundley (Denitra Isler) and Devon. I’m glad the writers gave her a good send-off. I also loved the shot off her locker and everything left there for her. Then, we saw all her organs being rushed to save people’s lives, and Gigi said “Mama” as the helicopter was taking one of her organs. This episode seriously wrecked me.
