The Resident gives us a fun and spooky episode right before the promo of a time jump and many changes. Time jumps are always good to mix up the storylines, but I have mixed feelings about where everyone is.
But first, the episode at hand. The Halloween episode. These are always fun. This one even had a coven of witches having hallucinations. One told Dr. AJ Austin (Malcolm-Jamal Warner) that he had a halo, and I loved his reaction. AJ was on fire during this episode having the best response to everything. One of his patients said his house was haunted, and AJ replied, you have to challenge the spirits to make them respect you. Dr. Devon Pravesh (Manish Dayal) wasn’t sure if AJ was being serious or not, but luckily for us, he was. AJ has an answer for everything and such amazing stories.
It wasn’t all fun and games. Dr. Randolph Bell (Bruce Greenwood) picked up a hitchhiker that turned out to be a serial killer. Dr. Kit Voss (Jane Leeves) just told him not to pick up anyone. Bell’s lucky he didn’t get himself killed. And somehow, even in that nerve-wrenching moment, the writers give a message that brought even more chills. Bell spoke about the patient he accidentally killed when he was operating when he wasn’t fit to. He said he didn’t get in trouble because the white coat was a shield. It’s true. It’s very accurate. It’s just a strange way of having Bell reflect on his past mistakes. But he’s not that person anymore.
It was another heartbreaking episode for Dr. Conrad Hawkins (Matt Czuchry), but his storyline finished on a much brighter note. First, Conrad went back to work early, as expected. Then, he worked on a patient who had lost her son and who he and Nic used to go to the woman’s book store. It was bringing up a lot, but the woman was actually helpful. She told him about a Pagan ritual where you sit and eat in silence as you reflect on your memories of someone you’ve lost. Plus, Halloween is believed to be the night the veil to the other side is thinnest, so those loved ones can hear you.
So, Conrad invited everyone over to do the ritual. It was good for everyone to say their messages to Nic Nevin (Emily VanCamp). There were so many tears, but so cathartic.
It was also so cute when GiGi’s Halloween costume came that Nic had bought. Even in death, she was still watching over them.
Is Nic leaving the reason why we’re having a time jump? We’re jumping over Conrad’s grieving process to a time when he’s not even a doctor. That can be for long, right? It’s not The Resident without Conrad in the ER.
Plus, just as we see Devon and Dr. Leela Devi (Anuja Joshi) moving in together, we jump to the future where she’s with AJ? And Bell is seeing someone else! We were just about to have Bell and Kit. So why can’t we have them? The new time will definitely take an adjustment.
