We’re are now three years into the future on The Resident, and a lot has changed. Some things almost feel precisely where we left them, but things are not normal with Dr. Conrad Hawkins not being a permanent fixture in the ER. So, how do we feel about this time jump?
For the most part, I love where we are. And I feel like Conrad (Matt Czuchry) isn’t far from going back to work. He spent one day with his old colleagues and discovered a man was misdiagnosed with cancer. Hawkins goes home to tell his daughter that it was his best day in a long time. He could still make this work for Gigi (Remington Evans). He doesn’t have to be doing house calls for wealthy patients. The doctor should do what he loves to show Gigi that she can find something she loves and make a career.
The promo tried to scare us. It looked like Dr. Leela Devi (Anuja Joshi) was sleeping with Dr. AJ Austin (Malcolm-Jamal Warner), but that was just her sister, Padma Devi (Aneesha Joshi). Anuga’s real-life sister! What a relief. It turns out that Leela and Dr. Devon Pravesh (Manish Dayal) are still living together! This makes me so happy. It also makes me so excited that Dr. Kit Voss (Jane Leeves) and Dr. Randolph Bell (Bruce Greenwood) are finally together! Though, the pomo had him telling her that he was seeing someone. Whoever created the promo was just trying to be cruel to us. So, not much has really changed. Other than Conrad having his own practice.
AJ was not himself at the beginning. His book had clearly gone to his head. This upset me because I love him, but it didn’t take him long to come back to earth. All it took was Kit hiring Dr. Billie Sutton (Jessica Lucas) as the Chief of Surgery over him. More on that later. Bell also wanted the job. Bell and AJ commiserated together, listing all the reasons why they would have hated the job. But the truth of the matter was Kit was right. AJ wanted it just to put another feather in his cap, and he wouldn’t have had time for it. Bell already had the job and hated it. This is why companies should put women in charge more often. She knew exactly what she was doing. And I’m so happy that AJ should hopefully be acting more like himself next episode.
And now to Billie being a badass boss! She’s perfect for the job. I just wish Nic Nevin (Emily VanCamp) was here to see this. She would be so proud. Chastain is going to be run so well with two women in charge. I’m so excited for the rest of the season now. I was nervous with Emily leaving and then with the time jump and things looking like they weren’t where we wanted them to be, but now, we have a lot of things to look forward to. We just have to get Conrad back to the ER, and everything will be perfect.
