Remember that anger I spoke about last week? Well, Good Sam has me even more furious with Dr. Rob ‘Griff’ Griffith.
Griff (Jason Isaacs) warned Dr. Sam Griffith (Sophia Bush) what she was getting into, but I don’t think she or us knew exactly what we were in for. Sam is so professional that she plays by all the rules while her dad plays extremely dirty.
The electronic butts seemed like a fun, yet expensive prank. Two million dollars, to be exact. And it was pretty embarrassing when the chair of the board, Byron Kingsley (Evan Parke), walked in when, as Sam said, she was in a “sea of butts.” She’s not making a good impression despite her excellent work.
That $2 million prank was way more costly. Griff is highly calculated. He helped Sam and Vivian Katz (Wendy Crewson) get the refund but lost a $12 million donation in the process. The donor owned that company and didn’t appreciate refunding the money.
Good Sam is giving me seriously mixed emotions. I’m angry because I hate what Griff is doing to Sophia’s character. But it was also quite funny to see her in the “sea of butts.” This war between father and daughter is just kicking off, and Sam is ready to fight back. I like the girl scout version of Sam, but she’s never going to win the war without playing by his rules.
While Sam’s fight with her father is heating up, so is her relationship with Malcolm A. Kingsley. I was a little nervous when his father told him he was making a mistake, that he didn’t want him in the middle of Sam’s family mess. And for a minute, he looked like he thought his dad had a point. Luckily, Sam being a badass helped him know that she wasn’t using him.
So, there are going to be two family battles on this show—Dr. Griffith vs. Dr. Griffith and Kingsley vs. Kingsley. Malcolm is taking Sam’s side, and I’m so here for this.
But Malcolm is not the only one that wants Sam’s heart. Her ex, Dr. Caleb Tucker (Michael Stahl-David), wants her back. I didn’t think he could still be in the picture until he made her laugh, and she said she needed that. There was a look. So, you can still have hope if you are rooting for Caleb. I’m team Malcolm, but it’s early, so who knows what the writers want us to think yet.
Caleb isn’t the only resident that the writers are fleshing out. We got to see more of Dr. Joey Costa (Davi Santos), and they are honing in on his love for plastics. While things are fun for Joey, Dr. Isan M. Shah (Omar Maskati) just got a wrongful death lawsuit.
We also met a new character this week, Asher Pyne, played by Sendhil Ramamurthy. I saw him listed as a character on IMDb and was curious who he would be playing. I liked him in Heroes and Beauty and the Beast. I need to finish the latter. He’s playing Vivian’s new and younger husband. I love their dynamic. He’s completely okay talking about her ex-husband. He’s there reminding her to do the breathing exercises they worked on, and if all else fails, there are boundaries.
I love the level of calm he brings with his tone of voice and personality. It kind of describes how well the show is at balancing out the seriousness and the comedy. There are some great hilarious moments in the midst of what can be a pretty intense show. That balance keeps what could sometimes be seen as an absurd father and daughter fight looking like a fun and exciting face-off.
Now that Sam will be digging up dirt on her father, it may be more of a fair fight. But I don’t know how anyone can put a man back in charge who loses the company $12 million all for his own gain. Do the writers want us to have any respect for Griff? Maybe they are just banking on our love for Sophia Bush.
