Even though Emily VanCamp is gone, I love that Nic Nevin is living on. I hope The Resident always finds ways to remember her.
“Her Heart” was an aptly named episode. It was also a beautiful one. While jumping forward makes the absence of Nic a little less noticeable because everyone is in different places in their lives, she still has left a hole in the show. Gigi (Remington Blaire Evans) helps fill that void, but this episode was a great way to keep the memory of Nic alive.
Not only did we get a patient coming in with Nic’s heart, but it was also our mystery case this week. It doesn’t get much better than that. Regardless of what anyone said or did, this case was personal. None of them could let Nic’s heart die.
One of the most beautiful and heartbreaking parts of the episode was when Dr. Conrad Hawkins (Conrad Hawkins) told the patient that his wife was an organ donor and saved many lives, including hers. I was already crying when Conrad asked her if he could introduce her to his daughter. Then Gigi came and listened to her mom’s heart and said, “Hi, mommy.” It was the sweetest thing and also heartwrenching. The Resident knows how to his us with the feels.
A patient coming in with Nic’s heart wasn’t even the most emotional thing that happened in this episode. Conrad diagnosed Dr. Randolph Bell (Bruce Greenwood) with Multiple sclerosis, and Bell took it pretty hard. He was ready to leave medicine, leave Dr. Kit Voss (Jane Leeves). We finally got an I love you between then just to have Bell break up with her.
But luckily, Kit didn’t shake so easily, and we got an even more emotional scene when she told him he was the greatest love of her life and was “pretty sure” she was the same for him. We waited so long for them, and it was definitely with the wait.
Wrapped up in this storyline was Dr. Jake Wong (Conrad Ricamora) and Sammie (Chedi Chang) returning. I loved them from last season. I hated that we were missing them this season. While I hated that they returned for this (well, technically, they were here for Luna New Year celebrations, it was for Bell’s diagnosis storywise.) I’m glad that Bell told Jake. They’ve come such a long way. I hope this means we will see more of him.
And also because the writers just introduced us to the chemistry that is Gigi and Sammie. The cuteness level was out the roof. Sammie took such good care of Gigi when she got scared of the dragon. And when reading Gigi a story, she even used different voices for the characters. If the writers gave us this without intending to provide us with more, they would have to change that fast. This is a thing I didn’t know I needed, but now that I know, the writers better not disappoint.
It was nice to get that cuteness in between all the intensity. Dr. AJ Austin’s (Malcolm-Jamal Warner) mom is not doing well. He tried to get her into Dr. Devon Pravesh’s (Manish Dayal) clinical trial, but she didn’t meet the criteria. Like the other emotional storylines, this one had a good outcome. AJ’s mom was relieved not to be going into the trial. Instead, they will be giving her palliative treatment to treat the pain so she can live her life as fully as possible for as long as she has left.
I’m glad this was the outcome, but it was pretty intense when AJ and Conrad tried to get Devon to change his mind. But Devon was right. The amount of pain she would be going through wouldn’t be worth it for her or the science. It’s his first trial, and he’s already making the tough decisions and having to face two of his fellow doctors while doing it.
This really is an excellent place for him. He’s well suited for this role. I’m glad he’s found his niche in medicine, and it looks like his girlfriend, Dr. Leela Devi (Anuja Joshi), is finding her place too, with the specialty of neurosurgery. I am so here for Dr. Billie Sutton (Jessica Lucas), being her mentor.
