It would be pretty incredible to have a woman lead UBA, especially with all the other strong and powerful women on The Morning Show, but considering the promo showed Paul Marks offering Stella Bak the job, I doubt this will come to fruition. And if it does, the promo gave a major thing away.
Warning: Spoilers
It seems like it could fit with Stella’s (Greta Lee) history with Paul (Jon Hamm) and his dislike of Cory Ellison (Billy Crudup) that she would take over as CEO. It’s only episode six of The Morning Show season three, so there are many more twists and turns coming our way. Cory is resourceful, so I could see him keeping his job.
And while it feels like this is the end of Cory, I doubt the creators would write Billy off the show. He’s at the center of it. He’s a character I love to hate. Billy plays him so well, and it would change the entire dynamic of the show without him.
That said, he’s not the character we started the love/hate relationship with. He’s always been ruthless, but now he’s just plain mean. His actions are warranted, though. Bradley Jackson (Reese Witherspoon) put him in an impossible situation when she told Cory about deleting the footage of her brother at the capital. And the situation reared its head once again. Plus, UBA is in financial ruin with only the hope of Paul taking over to save it. It’s easy to see why he’s not smiling anymore.
I also don’t totally trust Paul. He can be manipulative. He threw Alex Levy (Jennifer Aniston) waiting for him at his hotel and Mitch Kessler (Steve Carell) right in her face. And he had almost the perfect answer to Alex asking him about the student who had a suicide attempt. He was shocked. He was genuine for a moment, but is he really that pure? Cory has been working with him for two years to get this deal to go through, and he’s ready to toss Cory as soon as it’s done. It’s hard to say what is genuine with this man and what isn’t. We don’t know his character well enough to truly understand yet.
It would be great if Jon could be in season four as well. There could be much more to explore with his character, especially with all the incredible Jennifer and Jon scenes. They have such great chemistry. It was inevitable the writers would put them together, and it’s why The Morning Show should keep him around.
Could Jon’s Paul replace Billy’s Cory? They are both ruthless in different ways and have a lot of charm. While Bradley didn’t fall in love with Cory, he did charm her and get her to trust him. It would be hard to imagine The Morning Show without Cory, but Paul could replace that character type and bring his own spin to it. It’s hard to deny the chemistry that Jen and Jon have, and Billy and Reese are not having those types of similar scenes anymore.
Of course, Alex and Paul sleeping together could complicate everything. But it wouldn’t be any fun without those complications, and The Morning Show loves to bring the drama.
