This end of the world looks like many other apocalypses on Supernatural, even without Chuck pulling strings. On the one hand, I wouldn’t expect it to be any other way. On the other, this is the end, and there is no guarantee everyone comes out alive.
Jack (Alexander Calvert) became a Winchester when he sacrificed his soul to save Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Dean (Jensen Ackles). And now that he has his soul back, he wants to make the ultimate sacrifice for them, take out Chuck and Amara while killing himself.
It is the Winchester way. Mary started all of this when she sacrificed herself to save John. Then John did the same for Dean, not even knowing Mary had sacrificed herself for him. The tradition is continuing all the way to the very end.
Castiel (Misha Collins) is also part of this family, and he can’t let Jack do it, so he wants to be the one to take on that responsibility. Another typical Winchester move.
We’re left hanging as Cas is about to tell Dean that Jack will carry on the tradition. Dean can’t take this well, even being mad at him. Sam will take it even worse. But what can they do at this point? Amara is onboard, and what else will be powerful enough to kill the first creatures in the universe?
We will have to wait until next week to see what Dean’s reaction is, but this week was an excellent episode focused on Castiel and Jack. It’s always a treat to see Cas on a case. He’s brushed up on his skills too, Jack had more awkward moments, but even he was doing pretty well.
Throughout “Gimme Shelter,” we were gifted with great emotional scenes. Jack telling Cas he’s going to die was one of them. Cas made me teary-eyed when he spoke about having blind faith and losing his way. Then finding his way and purpose again when he found a family. It was so beautiful to hear him speak about his journey.
We also got an emotional scene from Dean asking Amara why she brought back Mary. It was kind of sweet that she wanted him to see the complicated, real Mary. To see, she was a person and not just the myth he had in his mind. And, she thought it would help him let go of his anger.
I believe it was a blessing for him to get a second chance with his mother, even if it did end in tragedy. She had been ready to go back to heaven from the moment she was brought back. She stayed because her boys needed her. Dean should be grateful for that extra time with his mother.
Dean does not see getting his mother back as a blessing, and Amara definitely didn’t help with his anger. He’s more furious than ever. His mother being killed is part of his anger, but it’s more, as he says, he’s been on a hamster wheel his entire life. While yes, Chuck has been pulling strings with what is thrown at them, Sam and Dean are the ones that defeated each obstacle. Maybe they will see that in the end.
Jensen, Misha, and Alexander were incredible in “Gimme Shelter.” Superb acting from all three, but unfortunately, the writers didn’t give Sam much to do in this episode. Hopefully, next week Jared will get more to work with.
As we near the end of Supernatural’s 15-year run, I love these beautiful moments with the characters reflecting on their journeys, and it would be great to see that from Sam, too.
