From the beginning of Superman & Lois, it was clear that it would be all about family, and that shined through on that front in season 2 episode 5.
The biggest family storyline of this episode was Sarah Cushing’s (Inde Navarrette) quinceañera. She celebrated her 15th birthday and took her father’s Spanish name that was changed to Cushing, because her grandfather couldn’t get a job.
I love the strength Sarah has. I wasn’t too happy about her cheating on Jordan Kent (Alex Garfin), but everything else, she’s just been so remarkable. But overhearing her father with his mistress was a lot to handle. Especially right before she was going to have to dance with him. I liked Kyle Cushing (Erik Valdez), but it’s hard to come back from this. He has such a fantastic family and for him to do this to them is awful.
He does feel remorse for it, though. He told Clark Kent (Tyler Hoechlin) that he had just made a big mistake, and his family was about to pay for it. While this scene did nothing for me to sympathize with Kyle, it made me appreciate Erik as an actor. Just the emotion, love and regret that he portrayed in that one line was incredible.
The Cushing family has been through enough, and now they have to deal with Kyle’s infidelity. But I loved how Lana Cushing (Emmanuelle Chriqui) wiped Sarah’s tears away and got her to celebrate herself with their family and friends. Then that speech was so sweet — Lana saying Sarah is her inspiration for everything. Both of these women are so strong. I enjoy the female empowerment I get from watching Superman & Lois.
The Cushing family moments were bittersweet, while the Kent ones were a little more serious. Jon Kent (Jordan Elsass) is in a terrible place. He’s using the x-kryptonite to give him powers and acting erratic. Sarah was right to say not to ignore it. But now Jon has laser eyes, and it didn’t come from his father, and he won’t tell Jordan the truth. This storyline is just spiraling out of control.
It makes perfect sense, though. First, it’s hard to see your brother have powers and you don’t. Then to top that off with one of your teammates getting superhuman strength, for a 14-year-old, that’s hard to handle. Finally, I just wish he could look to his mother, Lois Lane (Bitsie Tulloch). She has no powers, yet she’s out there doing good through her writing. She’s an absolute badass. But it’s hard to see that about your parents when you are that young.
Lois is in a tight spot of her own. While she probably could have shared more about her sister’s situation with Chrissy Beppo (Sofia Hasmik), she can’t exactly reveal that her husband is Superman. Unfortunately, that means that she can’t be honest about everything, or at least not entirely.
But luckily, that fight may be over. And, of course, Ally Allston (Rya Kihlstedt) is a dangerous person. Me, being a Lois stan, knew that already but for any doubters, the moment Ally drugged Chrissy, it made it crystal clear. And Ally may be even worse than we thought and have something to do with Bizarro Superman being in our world. Chrissy said she was in a bizarro world, well she didn’t use that word, but that’s pretty much what she meant.
Once again, Lois was predicting that too. She was rethinking everything after Superman’s evil twin appeared. This is why you should never doubt Lois. She may protect her family over all else, but she’s rarely wrong.
We have an exciting villain storyline happening, but the family dynamics are fractured. Who knows what will happen to the Cushings after Kyle’s betrayal and how Lois, Clark and Jordan will react when they find out how Jon really got his powers?
