The second season of Gossip Girl had a disappointing premiere, but the second episode made up for it. And the latest trailer shows we could be in for a pretty scandalous season.
The original Gossip Girl was good at the scandalous episodes, so of course, I was expecting a lot from the season two premiere. It didn’t deliver. There were some good moments. I love the Aki Menzies (Evan Mock), Audrey Hope (Emily Alyn Lind) and Max Wolfe (Thomas Doherty) storyline. It’s a triad couple, which isn’t something I’ve seen on TV before, but it is a thing. I could never do this because I couldn’t share my boyfriend, but it’s working for these three. And if they are happy, more power to them. I’m always here for a great couple, and I’m shipping these three. It will be interesting to see this couple grow. While I would love them to just live happily ever after, this is Gossip Girl and there will be drama.
Zoya Lott (Whitney Peak) was pretty annoying in the first episode. I loved her passion in the first season and how much she fought for her causes, but she was hiding behind this in the first episode. In the second episode, she’s less annoying but still very misguided. And it’s a little bit of a flip from what she was upset about in the first episode. But I think this story arc could be good for her if she actually talks about what’s really bothering her.
The biggest issue with the season premiere was the big scheme just didn’t hit like the ones from last season or the ones from the original series. The plan wasn’t a big blow-up. It was understated and probably the right thing to do, and the fallout from that just felt so childish.
While the first episode didn’t feel like a premiere, it did start a Serena and Blair showdown, which was missing from the first season. Julien Calloway’s (Jordan Alexander) reign is being questioned by one of her own minions. Granted, the minions were of higher status than the minions of the OG Gossip Girl. The character is ready to not only take Julien’s crown but also take her down. Plus, she brings in her own minions that feel more like Blair’s.
The second episode made up for the lackluster premiere by having one of the classic Gossip Girl dinners where everything goes wrong, and everyone’s secrets come out. With this being a more modernized show, it gets pretty crazy.
When you watch the “This Season On” trailer, it’s clear that the first two episodes are setting up for the craziness that is coming.
Spoilers Below
The rest of the season looks like it will be more exciting than the first two episodes. Aki, Max and Audrey have trouble ahead. Julien keeps trying to “take the high road” as Monet de Haan (Savannah Lee Smith) rules the school as a dictatorship. It also looks like Georgina Sparks (Michelle Trachtenberg) teams up with Kate Keller (Tavi Gevinson) to be Gossip Girl again! Hopefully, she’ll be a better GG this time around.
If the trailer is anything to go by, we’re in for a pretty crazy season. Then we will forget all about the lackluster premiere.
