The 5th Annual Critics’ Choice Television Awards is on Sunday, where some of the best on TV will be honored.
The Broadcast Television Journalists Association (BTJA) will announce the winners at the Beverly Hilton Hotel on Sunday, May 31 8/9c p.m. A&E will broadcast the award show live with a one-hour Red Carpet Special before the show.
“From streaming television to broadcast and cable, single-camera to multi-camera productions, inventive reality shows to high-end drama series, this year’s Critics’ Choice Television Awards contenders really span the gamut,” said BTJA President Joey Berlin on the website. “It’s thrilling to continue to see such creativity and diversity in television programming, and as television journalists, it’s exciting to be able to share our favorites with viewers.”
It’s an exciting time in television with so many great dramas. The nominees for the Best Drama Series shows the variety on TV at the moment: ‘The Americans’ (FX), ‘Game of Thrones’ (HBO), ‘Empire’ (FOX), ‘The Good Wife’ (CBS), ‘Homeland’ (Showtime), ‘Justified’ (FX) and ‘Orange is the New Black’ (Netflix).
‘Game of Thrones’ is one of the most watched programs on TV and is one of the most pirated shows as well. ‘The Americans’ is a very fresh take on the over done spy show. ‘Homeland’ is been doing strong even after writing off one of its main characters. ‘Empire’ broke records in its first season and got renewed for a second after only one episode. As for ‘The Good Wife’, ‘Justified’ and ‘Orange is the New Black’, I’ve never checked out these shows, but I’ve heard nothing but good.
Shonda Rhimes knows how to pick talented actors and she did it again with ‘How to Get Away with Murder’. Viola Davis is nominated for the Best Actress in a Drama Series award. Eva Green was a screen stealer in the first season of ‘Penny Dreadful’ and continues to be in the second season. Her stunning performance has gained her a nomination for best actress award as well.
I first saw Keri Russell in the ‘Mickey Mouse Club’, but I didn’t become a fan until ‘Felicity’. She blew me away in ‘The Americans’ and it’s no surprise that she was nominated for a Critics’ Choice Award. Julianna Margulies (‘The Good Wife’ CBS), Taraji P. Henson (‘Empire’ FOX) and Vera Farmiga (‘Bates Motel’ A&E) are also nominated.
Matthew Rhys is nominated for a third time for Best Actor in a Drama Series for ‘The Americans’. I loved him in ‘Brothers and Sisters’ and he’s even better in the FX show. He definitely deserves to win, but he has some steep competition: Aden Young (‘Rectify’ Sundance), Bob Odenkirk (‘Better Call Saul’ AMC), Charlie Hunnam ‘Sons of Anarchy’ FX), Freddie Highmore (‘Bates Motel’ A&E) and Timothy Olyphant (‘Justified’ FX).
It’s nice to see someone under 30 nominated. Mae Whitman blew me away in ‘Parenthood’. It wasn’t even a teenage show and she still managed to grab your attention. She’s up against a lot of talented ladies for the Best Supporting Actress in a Drama Series award: Carrie Coon (‘The Leftovers’ HBO), Christine Baranski (‘The Good Wife’ CBS), Joelle Carter (‘Justified’ FX), (Katheryn Winnick ‘Vikings’ History) and Lorraine Toussaint (‘Orange Is the New Black’ Netflix).
Ben Mendelsohn totally creeped me out in ‘Bloodline’ and I’m not surprised that he’s been nominated for an award. The entire show was incredible and Danny just grew more and more untrustworthy as the story unfolded. Ben really captured the role.
Mandy Patinkin has always been a central character on ‘Homeland’. He may be nominated for a Best Supporting Actor award, but he’s one of the stars of the show.
These two men have tough competition to win the prize: Christopher Eccleston (‘The Leftovers’ HBO), Craig T. Nelson (‘Parenthood’ NBC), Jonathan Banks (‘Better Call Saul’ AMC) and Walton Goggins (‘Justified’ FX).
