From watching the preview I see things have been modernized, but there will be somethings that stay true to the original. It appears the iconic Drew Barrymore scene has got an upgrade, but it will still be featured. The garage death scene also looks like it will be incorporated. There is also a scene that looks like something from ‘Friday the 13’, where a boy gets killed in a lake.
The trailer depicts the show staying true to the roots of the ‘Scream’ franchise. One of the characters says, you “can’t do a slasher movie as a TV show,” because they “burn bright fast.” The original film was very meta too, talking about how to survive a horror film. The latest film, ‘Scream 4’ spoke about the updated rules. Will the rules be different for a TV show?
There also looks like there will be a dose of high school drama with Emma Duvall (Willa Fitzgerald) saying, “You slept with Nina.” By the way, you just saw Willa guest star on ‘Gotham’ as The Ogre’s victim, Grace, on Monday night.
Bella Throne will play the aforementioned Nina. She also has been reported to die in Drew’s iconic opening death scene, so you won’t be seeing too much of Bella.
There’s a lot of relatively new faces starring in the new MTV series: Carlson Young (Brooke Maddox), John Karna (Noah Foster), Connor Weil (Will Belmont) and Amadeus Serfini (Kieran Wilcox). You might also recognize Bex Taylor-Klaus (Aubrey Jenson) from ‘Arrow’, ‘House of Lies’ and ‘The Killing’. You may have also seen Tom Maden (Jake Fitzgerald) from ‘Make it or Break it’ and on three episodes of ‘Parenthood’. Bobby Camp (Seth Branson) from ‘Being Human’ is also starring in the ‘Scream’ show.
When you sign on to do a horror TV show, you can’t expect to make it through the whole series. If you remember the first film, (Spoiler alert!) only five people survive, which is actually more than most horror films. The TV series doesn’t have any of the same names, so you’ll have to guess who they are portraying from the film and who knows if the storyline will differ from the film. For a TV show, they will have to expand on the plot, there’s no telling how many more deaths there could be.
The IMDb descriptions says: “What starts as a YouTube video going viral, soon leads to problems for the teenagers of Lakewood and serves as the catalyst for a murder that opens up a window to the town’s troubled past.”
We know Woodsboro’s troubled past from the film, but what will Lakewood’s sorted past be? With different character names and a different town, the writers can be very creative. The new technology since the 1996 film can prove very valuable, starting right off the bat with a viral video. I also read that the original ghost mask won’t be used, they’ve created a new one unique for the show. The writers’ creativity is already shining through.
I’m excited and open minded to see what this new chapter of the Scream franchise will hold.
