Sarah Howard’s style on The Alienist is so timeless that you can easily adapt it for today. Puffy sleeves are even back in style, and plaid is always a great choice.
Dakota Fanning’s character first caught my eye for her style when she wore a purple plaid jacket with a matching hat and tie. You could almost wear this look today. Instead of a big skirt, it could be a pencil skirt or black pants. You would look stylish but also very professional, and if you are bold enough, even wear the hat!
Imagine a high-waisted pant or pencil skirt with the V like Sarah was wearing with the black jacket. It would look exquisite. The sleeves are just so stylish. It’s hard not to see all these costumes and daydream about how you could wear them today. Who knew so much inspiration could be found in a period piece set in the late 1800s?
Her black and tan plaid dress was also incredible. This pattern would look great as a dress with a different cut that is more modern or even a blouse to go with a pair of black pants or a pencil skirt.
Sarah has undoubtedly found her look in season two, and combining that with her opening a detective agency, she’s truly found herself.
In the late 1800s, it was tough for women, especially career women. Fashion has always been a way to stand out and be taken seriously.
Sadly, you know you take notice of a woman who looks stunning and professionally dressed more than you take note of someone who doesn’t have the right look, even though it’s more important what the person has to say.
Sarah is a great character to look to if you are looking for style inspiration, and you can find blazers with puffy sleeves that will look similar to the dresses she’s wearing on The Alienist.
We need a designer to take inspiration from this show and design a collection that modernizes the look but keeps the timeliness of Sarah’s style.
