I know people die on Grey’s Anatomy, but I was not ready for this. I was very excited about the show’s return. Grey’s is my self-care, and I’ve needed it.
I don’t always watch the Station 19 episode in the crossover. It depends on how much they cross over. This time it was Dr. Carina DeLuca (Stefania Spampinato) and Dr. Andrew DeLuca (Giacomo Gianniotti). I am so glad I watched it. I would never have forgiven myself for not seeing the whole story of DeLuca’s death the way it was mean to be seen.
There was a brief moment in time when I was rooting for Dr. Atticus Lincoln (Chris Carmack) for Dr. Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo), but Andrew won me over, and I was all in on him. He’s been a character I’ve always liked. And the more we got to know him, the more I liked him.
He knew when no one else could see that the patient that had come in was a victim of sex trafficking. Even in his manic state, he could see it. Not even Dr. Miranda Bailey (Chandra Wilson) could see it.
It wasn’t his fault that the woman got away. That’s why everyone at Grey Sloan Memorial will be grieving and feeling a lot of regrets. If they had only seen what he saw, maybe Andrew would still be alive.
If he has to die, this was a good farewell to him. He was a hero. He didn’t let the woman get away this time.
I was lost most of the time in Station 19 (which I may actually have to watch now), but I’ve been asking for more Andrew and Carina brother-sister moments, and they finally gave it to me, when it was the last time that they could.
I never knew how close they were. It breaks my heart that she has lost him when all she tried to do was protect him.
Once he got to the hospital, everyone did everything possible to save him. Dr. Owen Hunt (Kevin McKidd) called in Dr. Teddy Altman (Kim Raver) because they could compartmentalize their emotions for the surgery due to their military background.
Dr. Levi Schmitt (Jake Borelli), in his guilt for treating the woman that Andrew was following, asked Dr. Nico Kim (Alex Landi) for advice. He wanted to help because he felt guilty about treating the woman who was sex trafficking girls. Nico told him to find the best surgeon to help him. And he did. He chose Dr. Reza Khan (Nikhil Shukla) because he had worked as a surgeon in Pakistan.
Sadly, that wasn’t enough to save him.
I knew it was a bad sign when we saw Andrew with Meredith on the beach. But I didn’t want to believe it.
We at least got a farewell scene with them. Andrew has no regrets. He risked his life so no one else would get hurt. I hope that woman never gets out of prison to hurt anyone else.
Andrew wasn’t the only one with heartbreaking moments in the episode. Dr. Amelia Shepherd (Caterina Scorsone) asked Dr. Maggie Pierce (Kelly McCreary) for advice on telling Zola (Aniela Gumbs). Right after Zola had overheard her talking about the dire state her mother was in.
Amelia called Dr. Jackson Avery (Jesse Williams) to get Maggie when she wasn’t answering her phone because neither Link nor Amelia could drive.
Unfortunately, Jackson walked in on Maggie and her new beau Dr. Winston Ndugu (Anthony Hill). But he has no regrets because it was for Meredith. He called her family. He said he wanted her to live for himself, for her, and the world.
I love the sisterhood that Meredith, Amelia, and Maggie have formed. And it breaks my heart now watching Maggie and Amelia worry about her kids and what will happen to Meredith.
We have recently heard that this season may be the last. Will Mere make it? If this is the end, will they kill her off in true Grey’s Anatomy fashion?
For the moment, let’s grieve Andrew and hope that we see Meredith another day, not on the beach.
