Good Sam is coming full circle as it goes into its season finale. I’ve said it before, and I’m going to continue shouting it from the rooftops. CBS needs to renew this show. It’s so good, and I need more of it in my life.
It’s incredible how far Dr. Griff Griffith (Jason Isaacs) has come to just revert to his old ways. He finally had a good relationship with his daughter, he had a good thing going with Dr. Lex Trulie (Skye P. Marshall), and his proctorship was over. Everything was going so well for him. And then, he sleeps with his ex-wife, Vivian Katz (Wendy Crewson). That was only the start of him reverting to his old ways. First, he didn’t get punished for drunk driving. While it happened 20 years ago, and there’s no record of it, Griff is a man that needs consequences to learn anything. Then he got his chief spot back and started treating the residents like he did before. Nothing had changed. This is why the man needs consequences. Vivian got relieved of her duties, though. It’s always someone else paying for his mistakes.
While I hate that Griff and Sam Griffith (Sophia Bush) are in competition again, I love that she’ will keep her chief position. It’s what I wanted for her from the beginning. I figured she’d get to keep her job, but I didn’t see everything coming full circle as it has. But this time, Sam is outsmarting her dad.
Griff would have done the same thing as Sam if he had taken her idea and tweaked it to get it to work. The problem with Griff is he’s too stuck in his ways. He tried the procedure in a simulation 18 times and failed every time. It didn’t once occur to him that he should change something to make it work. That’s why Sam is the better chief. She looks for better ways not only in medicine but also in running the department. Why do doctors have to be miserable at work? Shouldn’t they enjoy their work? It’s a tough job, and the training needs to be tough, but a boss can be nice too. It’s not like Sam never yelled at the residents, but she only raised her voice when it was necessary. Not daily in every interaction. It’s no wonder Griff cheating on Lex was the last straw for the residents.
Maybe it’s not a bad thing that Lex and Griff broke up. Now, she and Sam can rebuild their friendship into something better. I already love them talking about Griff calling him Barry. Sam hates her father as much as Lex does, so they are consoling each other in a hilarious manner.
The entire breakup just made me love Lex even more. She was so decisive in breaking up with Griff, and for the most part, she kept her emotions in check during work. You can’t blame her for getting mad when Dr. Joey Costa’s (Davi Santos) drama was getting aired out in the ER, and Griff just happened to be in the middle of it. I loved that she went to her boss, Dr. Nick Vega (Gerardo Celasco), and set him straight. She’s not letting anyone else kick her around anymore. Though, the promo shows her and Vega kissing. You would think she would have learned sleeping with your boss is probably not a good idea. Not everyone can end up like Meredith Grey and Derek Shepherd.
This episode was all about taking back control. Sam stepped out of her father’s shadow and is helping her mom get her job back, even if she doesn’t like her so much at the moment. It also looks like she will give things another go with Malcolm Kingsley (Edwin Hodge). While I’m thrilled for them, I’m not for Dr. Caleb Tucker (Michael Stahl-David). It ended just as I said it would, with him getting hurt. Sam and Caleb have just never been on the same page. She should have just told Caleb that his leaving would upset her, but he has to do what’s right for his career instead of acting like she didn’t care, as he initially did.
I want to know why she wouldn’t commit with him while it looks like she’s ready to give it another go with Malcolm? Maybe too much baggage? I hope Caleb doesn’t go to Harvard. I like his character. But it’s understandable, with Griff coming back and Sam not willing to commit, that he’d want to leave.
Next week’s season final looks like it will be intense. While Sam gets named the permanent chief, it also looks like her dad steals it from him. It will be a big Dr. Griffith vs. Dr. Grififth showdown.
