Lana Cushing finally knows the truth about her childhood friend, Clark Kent. It was a beautiful moment between them in the last episode, but it hasn’t been easy since that scene. It’s kind of been heartbreaking.
It’s understandable how upset Lana (Emmanuelle Chriqui) was. She just learned of this monumental thing, and she’s trying to process it. And it’s not like Lana can talk to anyone about it. She can’t go out with friends and be like, I just learned Clark (Tyler Hoechlin) is Superman, and I can’t process this information. It would probably be beneficial if she could. It’s like on Charmed when Piper and Leo went to therapy but couldn’t explain everything that was wrong. Talking always helps, but it’s hard to know what to do when you can’t.
Lana getting angry at Lois Lane (Bitsie Tulloch) makes a lot of sense. She quickly realized she couldn’t be mad at Clark, so she channeled that anger at Lois. Lana had to put that anger somewhere. And if this is how she’s processing, then that’s how she’s processing it.
Of course, Superman is just the “tip of the iceberg,” as Lois said. I loved Lana’s face when Lois told her that Jordan Kent (Alex Garfin) also has powers. It’s like she felt her daughter going through everything she went through. Lana hasn’t even digested that her oldest friend is Superman, and now she’s being thrown even more information.
Lana almost told her daughter, Sarah Cushing (Inde Navarrette). She was thrilled to tell her, and then her youngest walked in, and she reconsidered. It appears that Lana understands how difficult it is to decide who to tell that secret.
She doesn’t want Sarah to lie to her sister or father, which is fair. But I can’t believe she doesn’t want anything to do with the Kents for the moment. It does make sense that it will be easier not to lie if they don’t see each other, but Sarah is a bright young woman. She will start asking questions just like she did in the kitchen. Lana will still have to lie. And Lois and Clark didn’t tell Lana not to tell Kyle Cushing (Erik Valdez). I think they could trust him. I keep thinking the worst of him. Like when he called his ex-mistress, and I thought he would get back together with her, but he got Sarah a spot on open mic night. I do love their father-daughter bond. I’m not saying Lois and Clark have to tell everyone. This isn’t The Flash, with everyone knowing his secret. But Sarah should know for Jordan’s sake. At least so she can understand why there were things Jordan couldn’t tell her. And then she can decide whether she can handle being with Jordan. Sarah should get that choice.
Lois should also tell Chrissy Beppo (Sofia Hasmik). There’s so much friction between them because Lois can’t tell her everything. It could be argued that since Chrissy is a journalist that she should be the last person they should tell. That could be true. But if she’s going to trust Lois and not go hunting after her own leads that could lead her right to Clark anyways, Chrissy should know.
But for the moment, we’re dealing with the fallout with Lana. I will miss the cute scenes with her and Clark. I love their friendship, but of course, that’s why this cuts so deep. With three episodes left of the season, hopefully, they will make up and come together to save Smallville.
