We got a very Oliver Putnam-centric episode this week, and I’m here for it. His Son of Sam game would be a lot of fun but maybe a little tasteless, given the circumstances.
Oliver (Martin Short) has been this very eccentric person since season one, and we love him for it. He has all of these fun stories, but it sounds like they are exaggerations most of the time. But it sounds like he did have a fun life. And was the life of the party back in the day. He tried to do it again at Mabel Mora’s (Selena Gomez) and Alice’s (Cara Delevingne) party, but he had other intentions. (Can we talk about how great it is to have Cara back? I’m glad it wasn’t just a one-episode thing.) Oliver wasn’t wrong, though. Alice wasn’t telling the truth. But it wasn’t what he thought it was. Sure, she fits the profile but considering the source. Can we really trust Jan (Amy Ryan)? (And why is Charles-Haden Savage (Steve Martin) falling back in love with her? She did kill Tim Kono and poisoned him.)
Mabel, Oliver and Charles had so many suspects in the first season, and they were always wrong. So it’s not surprising they were wrong again. Unless we find out that Alice has some connections to the Arconia, I think we can remove her from the suspect list for the moment.
Oliver says he can tell when someone is lying. And that’s true to an extent since he was right about Alice, but how has he gone this long without knowing his son isn’t really his?! Plot twist. And he loves his son so much. It seems like he knew Teddy Dimas (Nathan Lane) wasn’t telling him something but could never figure out what it was. But how could he never tell that his wife was hiding something from him? This is devastating for Oliver. He just reconnected with his son, so how can he now find out that he’s not his biological father.
Season two is seriously digging into the past. Though, we haven’t circled back around to Charles’ father and how all of that fits into the mystery for this season. We did get to meet Lucy. And that was a lot of fun. I hope next week’s episode is about Oliver dealing with this revelation. Martin is a stellar actor, so I’m excited to see how he handles it. I’m sure it will be hilarious, but he’ll also bring some emotion to it.
As for his cool Son of Sam game, I can see why he’s so interested in murder podcasts and solving mysteries. He’s been doing it for years. Although, in a less high stakes kind of way. As I said, it was distasteful to be playing the game not only when you are a person of interest in a murder investigation but also in the apartment where the murder takes place. They don’t want the detectives finding out about that. It just looks really bad. And bad for a jury.
They didn’t find any evidence in their apartments this time, at least. Mabel found the matchbook in the crawl space, so that’s technically not being placed in one of their apartments. Unfortunately, that video Oliver got does little to show who the murderer is, but the person in the video could be the person Lucy saw in the passageway.
It’s more disturbing that Mabel’s apartment has a crawl space and entryway. I would be afraid someone would break in when I was sleeping. The Arconia is excellent for a murder mystery show, but not somewhere I would actually like to live. I would worry that I was being constantly watched.
