While there haven’t been any direct clues on Only Murders in the Building that Jesse Williams’ Tobert is up to no good, I can’t help but feel that we shouldn’t trust him.
Warning: Spoilers
When Jesse started on Grey’s Anatomy, he was a Mercy West resident, but it wasn’t hard to fall for him with those eyes. Jackson Avery was a Grey’s Anatomy fan favorite when he said goodbye, and it was pretty easy to forget that there was a time we didn’t like him. So, if Only Murders in the Building chose Jesse for a nefarious role, he’d be the perfect person for the job. I was so happy to see Jesse back on my screen, and I fell for him all over again in season 3, episode 5, “Ah, Love!” It was fitting since it’s the same episode that Mabel (Selena Gomez) falls for him.
I’m not saying that Tobert is the killer, though he definitely hasn’t been ruled out as a suspect, either. It just seems too good to be true that this cute documentary guy is helping Mable while her two teammates are distracted with other things. It’s easy for Mabel to fall for him because he’s super cute and is interested in investigating the case. It would be a great rom-com story of how two people meet and fall in love. But our trio hasn’t exactly had good luck in relationships revolving around the murders in their building.
An easy conclusion is that maybe Cinda Canning (Tina Fey) hired Tobert to come between Mabel, Charles (Steve Martin) and Oliver (Martin Short). He’s done a pretty good job. She’s now solely investigating with him, and Charles and Oliver are also in a fight. So if this was the goal, mission accomplished.
He could also have other motives like he’s planning his next documentary. It wouldn’t seem right if it didn’t turn out that Tobert had other motivations. As the narration by Joy said, “In the city that never sleeps, how do you really know who the hell you’re sleeping with? People can conceal some very dirty secrets.” This could easily be alluding to Lorreta’s (Meryl Streep) secret scrapbook about Ben (Paul Rudd) that clearly paints her as the killer, but Oliver wasn’t the only one of the trio that took his relationship to the next level in “Ah Love!”
So far, Loretta is the only significant other that has major red flags. But Tobert could be better at hiding his. Though, I’m sure Loretta didn’t expect Oliver to be snooping through her apartment.
Only Murders in the Building is good at pointing us in the wrong direction before everything comes together when the killer is revealed. But there hasn’t been too much investigating going on this season. Mabel followed down the clues, but Charles got engaged and then unengaged. Oliver has been preoccupied with saving his play. With the trio torn apart, it’s hard to say how the investigation will end this season. They will likely be brought back together in some way. We want to see our trio walking through the clues and the killer’s reveal. It wouldn’t be Only Murders in the Building without that scene.
We’ll have to watch Tobert closely in the next few episodes to ensure he has no nefarious motives with Mabel or is using her for something else. Jesse played a good guy in Grey’s Anatomy, so it would be fun for him to play a more dubious character in Only Murders in the Building.
